Building and Transportation Services
Building and Transportation Services ensures compliance of the building code and oversees ordinances that regulate the construction, alteration and use of buildings, and transit options within the city.
The many different building permit applications submitted to the City require different types of review, including plumbing, heating and sewer and water permits. To better meet the needs of our customers, the city has a target timeline for the initial review of each type of permit and a FAQs page to answer questions you might have about permits and the application process. Click on the "Building Permits and FAQs" link to the right.

What is a Code Violation?
A code violation is any use of land, including vacant properties and buildings, which is contrary to the provisions of Prior Lake City Code.
Once a complaint is received, the City’s Code Enforcement Officer logs the information in a database. The complaints are ranked according to priority, with health and safety issues taking precedence over violations that do not pose an immediate health or safety risk. The Enforcement Officer will conduct a site visit and, if a violation is confirmed, a warning letter (Notice of Violation) will be mailed to the property owner. The Code Enforcement Officer will give the property owner a deadline to abate all violations on the site. This deadline will vary according to the number and type of violations on site.
When do I need a grading permit?
A grading permit, also called an excavating/filling permit, is required when greater than 500 square feet of surface area or 50 cubic yards of material is removed or deposited on your property. If you are grading in the shoreland area, a permit is required for removal or deposition of 10 cubic yards of material. For more detailed permit requirements, see Section 706 of the City Code or call the building department at (952) 447-9850.
What are the regulations for a backyard fire pit?
The National Fire code recommends locating your fire pit at least 25 feet any combustible materials (fence, garage, etc.) and at least 10 feet from any property line. Also a fire pit can be no larger than 3 feet in diameter.
If you have any specific inquiry regarding a possible zoning violation, contact Code Enforcement Officer Jesse Corrow at (952) 447-9811.
