FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS OF UTILITY BILLING
|
When should I fill my swimming pool?
The short answer is, after May 21. But here's why. Summer bills have a sewer rate cap whereby the sewer charge is applied up to a maximum of 150% of the average of your winter billings (i.e., if you average 20,000 gallons your cap for the sewer charge would be 30,000 gallons. All water used in excess of this amount would be charged the water rate but would not be charged the sewer rate). This can be a fairly significant savings depending upon each individual household's outside water use habits during summertime.
The June 1st water and sewer bill is the last billing cycle that contributes to this average calculation so it is important that you do not inflate the usage by the water used to fill a swimming pool. Therefore you should delay the filling of your swimming pool until after May 21 .
In most cases the average filling of swimming pools does not occur until after this date so the majority of residents would avoid the sewage charge on this. But in the case of El Nino you never know when the summer heat up will begin.
