Lakefront Fields are Named in Honor of Veteran

The athletic fields at Lakefront Park will now be named Patrick F. Cawley Fields, in honor of a Prior Lake veteran who was killed in action during the Vietnam War.

In 2000, Thomas Ryan Memorial Park was named in honor of Thomas L. Ryan, another Prior Lake veteran who was killed in action during the Vietnam War.

A member of the VFW Post 6208 had recently visited the Vietnam Memorial and noted that two, not one, Prior Lake residents had been killed while serving in the Vietnam War. Patrick Francis Cawley was born on April 10, 1948 and lived his entire life in Prior Lake, graduating from Prior Lake High School in 1966. He was a helicopter pilot for the U.S. Army and was shot down over Cambodia on May 21, 1970.

To honor Mr. Cawley, the city will install a permanent, free-standing sign by the Lakefront Park athletic fields as well as add a plaque to the field’s shelter.
