Public Works (Engineering and Maintenance)
The Public Works Department consists of Engineering and Maintenance Divisions. Learn about the work and accomplishments of this department in the Public Works Department Annual Report.
The Engineering Division works with new development projects, street and utility reconstruction projects, survey benchmarks, lake water
monitoring, the Comprehensive Lake Management Plan, record drawings, erosion control,
construction observation, water resources management and driveway, fertilizer and right-of-way permits.
The Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance, repair and construction of the city's infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, water and sewer utilities and parks. This includes new well construction, city water quality and pressure, hydrant flushing, outdoor watering regulations, snow plowing, street sweeping, road weight restrictions and street sign maintenance.

Who can help with my water bill and the service at my property?
The Utility Billing Department handles all questions about water bills, shutoffs and service flushes. Contact utility billing at (952) 447-9843 or (952) 447-9844.
What are the seasonal load limit restrictions on city streets?
The Minnesota Department of Transportation sets the effective dates for all seasonal load limits. The City has a street
map that shows affected city streets. Please see the Public Works Streets page for more information.
Does the City repair damage to my property that was caused by a snow plow?
If your property was damaged by a city snow plow, call the Public Works Department at (952) 447-9830.
When am I allowed to water my lawn and garden?
City ordinance 704.1500 regulates outdoor water usage. Click here for more information about sprinkling restrictions.
What is the hardness of the City's water? What about iron and manganese content?
The hardness is 20 grains per gallon. The iron and manganese content is less than one part per million.
Is the City responsible for garbage disposal?
No. Private sanitation companies provide the garbage disposal within the city. Refuse Haulers include: Buckingham Disposal, Inc., Dick's Sanitation, Prior Lake Sanitation, and Waste Management. An updated list, with links, can be found on the Utility Billing Web page.
Which electric company services my area?
Xcel Energy/NSP, MN Valley Electric, Shakopee Public Utilities and Reliant Energy/Minnegasco are providers for the City of Prior Lake. This detailed map shows the providers and areas they serve.
When will my street be rebuilt?
Each year the City Council approves a five-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Street reconstruction projects are identified in the CIP. City staff uses a Pavement Management System to determine which streets should be reconstructed or if other maintenance such as overlay or seal coating is adequate. To find out if your street is scheduled for reconstruction or overlay, call Public Works at 447-9830 or view the current CIP. |
