Sprinkling Restrictions
The Prior Lake City Council amended the ordinance related to City Water Works System in 2007. This amendment provided for changes to the hours, time of day, months, uses of water, and penalties related to lawn watering restrictions. The information below reflects these changes related to lawn watering restrictions or click on this Water Sprinkling Information handout.

All outside sprinkling, irrigation, car washing and other non-essential outdoor use of the Municipal Water System is restricted to an odd/even system in conjunction with an 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily ban effective May 1 to Oct. 1.

Residents with house addresses ending in an even house number may water lawns or use an outside hose before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. only on even numbered calendar days.

Residents with house addresses ending in an odd house number may water lawns or use an outside hose before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. only on odd numbered calendar days.

Exceptions are made for landscaping, including newly seeded or sodded lawns within the first thirty (30) days of placement. To qualify for this exception, you must fill out a sprinkling permit form. These forms are also available at the city hall, 4646 Dakota St. SE, or at (952) 447-9830. Private wells are exempt from these restrictions.

Penalties

Municipal water customers who violate this ordinance are subject to warnings and increased fines.

First offense: Warning

Second offense: $50

Third offense: $100

Each subsequent offense double: $200, $400 etc. if within the same calendar year. The fine is added to the next water bill.

Delay filling pools until May 21

If you have a swimming pool, you could save a few bucks on your summer utility bills by waiting unitl the third week in May to fill it and take your first plunge of the season. Summer utility bills have a sewer rate cap, in which the sewer charge is applied to a maximum of 150 per-cent of the average of your winter billings. In other words, if you average 20,000 gallons during the winter, your cap for the sewer charge would be 30,000 gallons. All water used in excess of this amount would be charged at the water rate but would not be charged the sewer rate. The June 1 water and sewer bill is the last billing cycle that contributes to this average calculation. Therefore, using water before the third week in May to fill a pool inflates the usage and pushes the average higher, negatively impacting summer utility bills.

Please call Public Works at (952) 447-9830 with any questions or further information regarding these restrictions.

Reminder: Utility billing is now located at City Hall, 4646 Dakota St. SE.
