Buckthorn (particularly Rhamnus cathartica) is an invasive species of tree or shrub that was originally introduced as an ornamental used in landscaping. The plant spreads rapidly through seed dispersal and ground-creeping roots. It can also host soybean aphids through the winter that can then spread into neighboring soybean fields.

The City of Prior Lake takes an active role in removing buckthorn from city parks and properties when staff time is available. In addition, Adopt-a-Park and Adopt-a-Project participants can consider "buckthorn pulls" to assist the city in managing buckthorn and reducing its spread.

For residents interested in removing buckthorn from their own lands, the city has buckthorn pullers available for loan. Call the City at 952-447-9896 and ask to borrow a buckthorn puller from Public Works. A $200 deposit is required and is refundable upon return of the tool. Pullers can be picked up at the Maintenance Center (17073 Adelmann St SE), weekdays 8-4:30PM.
