Flushable Wipes Clog City Sewer System

There are vast changes in elevation throughout Prior Lake which creates challenges of getting waste water from one area to another. The City depends on 41 sanitary sewer lift stations that convey the waste water from a low point in the gravity system to higher elevation. Other cities in the metro area have as few as three or four lift stations.

When the stay at home order first went into effect, we saw an increase in clogged pumps. This increase was due to residents using "flushable" wipes and other items when toilet paper was in short supply. Even though they say "flushable", they are not designed to pass through lift station pumps. When these non-biodegradable materials are flushed into the system it causes more station failures which could possibly result in waste water backing up into homes. This is a challenge for all cities that use lift stations. We would like to thank everyone for watching what you flush into the system.
